A HIGH-VALUE MAN
(pretty much true for women as well)
Sex is wonderful. It is also not very important. If you think about it with a level head you will realize that even chimpanzees and dung beetles are capable of it. Thus, it is a singularly BASIC of life. It is a low-value item shared by almost every living plant and animal.
So is breathing. Yes, ma’am! You should look for a man who is breathing. That should be … a minimum requirement.
If you are looking for a life-long relationship I think you should look for higher values that are less common, not basics (minimums).
A college friend of mine had a large beak and carried a lot of weight (think of a pear). He married a beautiful woman who could have had her pick of hundreds of handsome men (I kid you not … she was gorgeous … and many of the things I say about him I could also say about her). She found a high value man and kept him. What was it about Roy* (not his real name) that made him high value?
INTELLIGENCE. He was very smart. Mensa smart. High IQ. Perfect grades. Skimmed a chapter once and aced the test – smart. He knew stuff.
HUMOR. He could be a bit rough with humor or gentle. He knew how to laugh and how to help others laugh. He enjoyed life and shared his enjoyment with others.
MUSIC. He played several instruments and sang well. He ended up leading a traveling teen choir for several years and later was worship leader in a large church.
FAITH. He trusted in God and lived it. He was not a “surface” Christian. He sought daily to be as close to God as he could get. He also studied God’s Word and prayed (even when no one was looking). His faith was the real deal.
FAMILY. His family were everything. He was close to his parents when they were alive, as well as his brother. When he married his attention was on the needs and desires of his beloved ones. He spent time playing games with his children and teaching them how to ride bikes. Vacations were family events. They did everything together.
FRIENDLY. When in his presence you were his friend. He made people feel liked and welcome. He also was genuine in his friendships and interested in those he with whom he spent time.
COMPASSIONATE. Those without help … he helped. Those in need received his care. If you needed anything and he could provide it … he did. He did not easily give up on those who were making poor choices in life. I also know that he did not allow anyone to make excuses for poor choices, because that is NOT compassion (that is feeding their foolishness).
GIVING. He was never concerned with what he would get out of a relationship. He made his gifts personal. He made his time count.
PASSIONATE. His passions were many. Music. Family. Faith. Friends. Sports (yes, even a plus-size man can play tennis or golf). Career.
I was privileged to be among his friends (it is a very long list).
Not everyone can be as high-value as Roy. I’m not.
Yet, that does not mean that a man who desires it can’t be in the top 50%. That we can do.
So, speaking to those looking for a life-long relationship: There are a lot of low-hanging fruit available. Most of them are picked over, rotting, or wormy. If you want a quality relationship you should bring a ladder! Not every man is a Roy. But almost any man will do if you are willing to put up with a “breathing” model.
So, if that guy you are dating just wants to get you into the bedroom … he may not the one for you (no matter how “handsome” he may appear). You should look for someone who is above the base model on the inside, where it counts. The “no higher than a baboon” dude might be OK for a woman who also is “no higher,” but you can have so much more. Roy’s wife could have had any model she chose; she avoided the base and mundane level entries and went straight for luxury with a pear-shaped man, and she got the man of her desires.
Don’t ever settle. Seek someone who is higher value.
