Aaaaaaalrighty then. Picking up from where I left off in Update 1…
The first thing I realized when I started setting up the MM (Monster Machine, I think…or Music Machine…or Master Machine…but I like the first one best) which is the Dell Optiplex 3040 that will run Windows or Linux, contain my digital sheet music as well as allow me to directly read/play online music, connect my Tyros5 keyboard to the internet, index all of my sheet music, music books, registrations, voices, multipads, etc. so I can find what I want more quickly, AND provide backup storage in tandem with my Nextcloud, plus provide backups to my phone and laptop – yeah, it’s a monster – is that I’ve lost more than I thought as far as setting all of this up.
All things partitioning, operating systems, bios, that I used to be able to do in my sleep are things I haven’t done in a few years. This machine has Windows 10 Pro on it and I haven’t used Windows in so many years (and never Win10) it’s like navigating a foreign country! Add to that my extreme dislike of that o/s – an attitude that didn’t help much. So what used to take me a couple of hour to do actually took a couple of days. 3 days to be exact.
I still have a TON of tweaks to do, and still need to set up my Linux on that machine (I’m using Mint, for no other reason than that’s what’s on my laptops at the moment and I didn’t want to mess with yet another thing that’s different to me), I have my browser though and that’s what I need for most things – “most things” being reading online music at this point. The very first goal, and what I wanted to accomplish. And so that’s what I’ve been doing on and off today once I finally was able – mid-afternoon or so…
(I wanted to record and post a song but my shoulders and neck are pretty much out of commission after sitting and working in such a different position for so many hours – tomorrow I will have to take a day off I think!)
The first step was a big step, taken like a beginner; although many things came back to my mind as I went it, was far from instinctive as it all used to be!
Then the first goal of being able to read music from the internet, or from my digital PDF sheets I’ve collected (legally!), was next. And that was HUGE! And it was FANTASTIC (if you saw one of my chat updates today talking about it) and well worth all of the effort! And I am THRILLED! Because this process is well on its way to becoming reality, as something that I’ve planned and dreamed of doing for years!
So now that I have gotten a good start on this change*, #2 – streamlining my site – will be my focus. I’ve been doing a little bit here and there but putting my nose to the grindstone so I can get ‘er done is in the near future. Change #3 will involve the MM and will likely be ongoing for quite a while so I’m saving it for last. And somewhere in there I will get my new laptop set up to begin using that rather than these other 2 old ones, and one day I will just decide to do it.
So that’s where we are right now! It has been a DELIGHT so far, and will make things so much more organized and usable, and FUN!
