It occurred to me several weeks ago that nobody else in this family eats “kibble” – the parrots and Pete & I eat real food, and avoid processed 95% of the time. So we made the choice to feed Maisie & Chuy the same way. Tonight after making a batch of food for them I decided to put together a quick video showing most of the things they eat, I left out a few things, like pumpkin and HB eggs as examples, but this isn’t meant to be a treatise on feeding dogs. I just want to share what we’re doing with ours now.
I remember decades ago when I switched my parrots over to real food, there was such a ruckus in the online parrot community against those of us who no longer fed “bird kibble” – pellets, they’re called (same name as the undigestable junk that owls throw up) – and those of us who continued anyway incurred the ire of the many who swore that only a bird food company could process food and non-food ingredients to create the perfect diet for pet birds. Something similar has happened in the dog world and I’ve watched and read and listened for several years but it only just hit me recently that I need to make changes. Pete and I rarely eat processed foods anymore (well, me rarely; Pete occasionally), nor do the PoiBoiz, so why do the dogs? I couldn’t come up with a good answer…
I’m learning and will continue to learn forever, the same as I do for the rest of the family. But meanwhile I am thrilled with the improvement in the dogs’ look and energy that I know I am on the right track!
