This week I want to update my experience on the newest-to-me platform I started using, and do an update on what’s going on and where I am in my quest for an online social life that replaces Big Social Media in my life.
For those who need to catch up, I left Big Social Media – Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Pinterest – last year. And I have spent the time since trying out various platforms, sticking with some and leaving some. But now, for the first time, I think I’m exactly where I need to be. I feel like I have a good mix. Since I’ve already written about most of them, I just want to give my updated thoughts on the latest that I’ve joined, Savior Connect.
In varying degrees, I’ve been using Gab, Mastodon/Pixelfed, Mewe, Matrix, Rumble, and Telegram long enough that they are my go-to sources for chats, posts, and updates on what’s going on. I still, however, didn’t have a Christian platform, though participation in Christ-based groups on Gab and Mastodon did help fill that gap. So when a Mastodon friend mentioned Savior Connect I was interested, and joined and jumped right in with both hands.
That was Sept. 16, so I’ve been there just over 2 weeks. (You can read my initial impressions HERE.) But I felt at home within 2 days. And feel like I’ve been using it longer. I still have things to learn and explore there, but for what I’ve been using it, it has filled that last little social media need that I had. Everything I wrote 2 weeks ago is still true. Some of it even moreso. I have started a group for pet lovers there, which is fun, too!
This is a major accomplishment, my friends! It’s been over 2 years since I started the process, though I didn’t actually leave my former platforms until last year…and some I’m still on but no longer use, for various reasons, but that’s not going to continue much longer. So IF you are looking for something new, something that doesn’t try to control your opinions, information, or speech, something that isn’t run by a biased and power-hungry corporation who collects and owns your data, you can check out my suggestions and see if they are a good fit for you. And, though my social media needs are met already, you are active on a platform that you love, I’d love to hear about it!
(Just one last thought: These are a LOT of platforms! BUT I don’t use each one every day. I visit a few of them daily, usually spend more time on just one or two, and some I only visit once or twice a week. And on the days I’m physically able to do more, I spend even less time online. There’s no WAY I could be active on all of these every single day! )
