Musical March – March 25, 2025 Edition

So you want to play music, but learning an instrument seems like an insurmountable task? Well I’ve got good news for you! There are instruments out there that are fun, easy, and require no training! Just an ear, fingers, and some spare time…yes, really! With the multitude of online instructional videos we can learn to passably play songs without too much trouble of course, and that’s always an option. But that’s not what I’m talking about here…let me show you…

WOW, this was a couple of hours of great fun, researching and reading and DREAMING! I have always wanted a kalimba, and I think I’ve found the model I will be purchasing for myself for my birthday this year! And that Orba2? I think I’ve seen a video a few years ago but now that I’ve watched this in action again, gotta have one of these as well! (I’ve also decided to get my Melodica out for some fun playing time.) Of course I’ve already got a little collection of ukuleles (baritone, concert, and tenor sizes, including a resonator uke) but I’ve recently heard a bass model and…yeah…might have to invest in that… OH and speaking of ukes, most people think of the soprano sound when they consider them. But if you’re going to get one, try out the other sizes too! As much as I love my keyboards, I have had a great time with my ukuleles and Melodica too.

One other thing you might consider is one of the plethora of percussion instruments! I’ve touched on a couple, but the options are so many that I couldn’t include them in this post; most of them are great fun to play as well :). (I have castanets, maracas, claves, a tambourine, and have had bongo drums in the past, as well as a beautiful set of glass chimes that, unfortunately, didn’t survive the move 😭 .)
