Know Your World Keep an all-for-fun tally of your points. Write down your answers of Country, City/location, and Place as you read each description. Then grant yourself half a point for the correct Country, One point for the City (or location if more distinct). One and a half points for the name of the particular place. For example: Where may …

GUEST POST from Don: Theraping For Dollars
THERAPING FOR DOLLARS There are some subjects in which I find little levity. When pushed by government or big business and allowed little recourse or ability to resist, it becomes impossible to respond with lightness. Yet, we need to understand these situations for what they are. This post is specifically about therapists and mental health counselors, but …

GUEST POST by Don: Self-Scan
SELF-SCAN We are still in 1990. That’s about when this trend began. It was horrible then. The scanner often failed to identify item after item. What did you have to do then? You had to punch in the numeric code hidden on the product (often unreadable). There were piles of impossible to read items which had to be returned to …

GUEST POST from Don: Wind Chimes, Part II
PART II: WIND CHIMES, and other things. As reported in Part I, as I age I am finding that some things irritate this curmudgeon which didn’t as much when I was younger. In Part I we talked about wind-chimes, crowds, and weights & measures. I don’t want to submit an exhaustive list, because I would like to …

GUEST POST from Don: COOL
COOL Recently, I read ANOTHER inane article pushing the idea that the earth is warming AND that humans will have to find new ways to cool off (for +1.3 degrees F?). Have you noticed that government is pushing the electrification of all things home and travel? Strangely, they are doing this even though a well-known study concluded …

Some Interesting Internet Items
When we moved to this area the internet options were – ARE – limited to satellite or cellular. There isn’t even DSL – there aren’t even land line phone lines. Since we have woods all around us, and since it is expensive and offers limited bandwidth, satellite wasn’t an option for us. So cellular it …

GUEST POST from Don: Wind Chimes, part I
PART I: WIND CHIMES and other things that now bother this curmudgeon. My grandmother had the best popcorn popper. You could smell the hot oil and watch the kernels releasing air just before they popped large and fast. I really liked her. She had always been a hard worker and independent. However, it grated on me how she disliked certain …

GUEST POST from DON: It Is Time To…
IS IT TIME TO… Several economists are proclaiming “Now is the time…” 1. https://www.businessinsider.com/jeremy-grantham-recession-stock-market-crash-fed-bubble-rates-policy-2023-8?op=12. https://www.marketplace.org/2023/08/17/leading-economic-indicators-recession/ Now is the time to solidify your resources, they say. They are claiming that there is a serious recession coming. This time, they say, the recession was “baked in” when the Fed started raising interest rates. Namely, the Fed is hoping to cause a period of …

GUEST POST from Don: Courthouse Statue
COURTHOUSE STATUE In our little town is a statue of a Civil War soldier on the front lawn of the old county courthouse. The statue was created to honor hometown Confederates who fought and died in that awful conflict. This is Kentucky. 2/5ths of men from this state who fought in the Civil War fought for the Confederacy. In …
