The mind governed by the felshis death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6

I have been seeing a lot of flesh vs. spirit lately, just going about my life (both online and off), so it’s been heavy on my mind lately in various aspects. Then when I woke up this morning I had a strong inspiration from the Spirit to start studying. I looked up verses and Christian writings and was quite surprised at what I learned.

I won’t go into all the details…but so much of my Christian life (since March 7, 1976) I have heard and read that the carnal man (carnal = meat = flesh) is one who “accepted Christ” – topic for another post – but didn’t have a change of heart, or didn’t exhibit any change in his life. But still went to heaven because he had “accepted Christ”. I have at times, when in the Word, read something that caused me to question this. Then lately the entire subject has been at the forefront of my thoughts, and things have been happening that brings it up over and over again.

Well God was getting my attention, and it worked. And today I did some delving. I will be doing a lot more too. But I want to share bits of what I have found today – not necessarily what I expected – in my typical easy-to-read, easy-bite-off, easy-to-swallow style. So I’m off to a good start as I pray and study my way through this. It is my hope that what I’m finding may be of interest to others as well!

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they are are in the flesh cannot please God. Romans 8:6-8
There is now no condemnation for those who are in CHRIST JESUS because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit Who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-2)
For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by these Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:13, ESV)
For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. Galatians 5:17
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to His cross and crucified them there. Galatians 5:24
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." Ephesians 5:1,2
Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes - these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. Ephesians 5:4
If we claim to have fellowship with Him and yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have followship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin. 1John 1:6-7
Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His Word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 1John 2:3-5
Everyone who has been born of God does not sin, because His seed remains inhim; he is not able to sin, because he has been born of Gdo. This is how God's children - the the devil's children - are made evident. Whoever does not do what is right is not of God, especially the one who does not love His brother. 1John 3:9-10
Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14 NIV

I found these helpful as well…so decided to include them too.

Title: THE FLESH vs THE SPIRIT Within a red circle on the left, labeled THE FLESH, are the words of Galatians 5:19-21: The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. In the center of the graphic are the words of Galatians 5:24-25: Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. On the right is a yellow circle, labeled THE SPIRITUAL SOUL, with the words of Galatians 5:22-23: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23) - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
"The sign of whether you are indewlt by the Spirit is not that you have no bad desires, but that you are at war with them." John Piper

  1. One can be married, I suppose, and still fool around. It doesn’t sound like much of a marriage to me.
For me, marriage is not trying to see how far I can get away from my wife and still be married. Rather, my goal is to see how CLOSE I can get.
Same with my relationship with God. I am not even interested in finding the edge. The middle is exactly what I want.

    1. Great points, Don! I think when we are just trying to get into heaven/avoid the alternative without having to sacrifice the things we want, that’s one of the biggest indications that our heart isn’t in the right place. At all.
