Pete’s Surgery – May 13, 2024

Today was Pete’s long-awaited knee replacement surgery. It was a very long day for both of us! I was up at 3:30, we left shortly after 5:00. Here are some photos of his day!

Arriving at the hospital; hopeful, excited, and a little nervous.
Well THERE’s some good news! For me, at least!
Almost ready to go! Visits from doctors, last-minute exams, blood tests…pretty busy until he was wheeled into the O.R. at about 07:30!
He was in his room by 10:30ish, looking pale, feeling groggy, still numb from the ribs down, and happy it was done!
Gorgeous view of the spring colors in the neighborhood outside of his window – absolutely stunning when the sun finally came out, too!
Within 2 hours of getting to his room, he was standing…and not only that, but he then walked about 12′ to the recliner on the other side of the room. Without help! Just with his walker! His aide, a big strong guy, was standing just to the right so I could get the picture.
(I didn’t film Pete’s first steps because the aide was walking right with him.)
Started his breathing exercises as soon as he got settled into the recliner, and loved sitting by the window.
This is pretty much how I left him, his phone in hand, TV on, happy and doing GREAT!

I left at about 14:30, wanted to get home to the animals since we’d been gone so long. And Pete was going to have a busy afternoon as well. We’ve been talking via Marco Polo and texting most of the evening (after I got a nap), and apparently when the PT and OT therapists came they had him up walking around in the room. Later, he went for a nice walk out in the hallways – on a new knee that was less than 10 hours old. When his surgeon came out to me after surgery he said the knee was full-weight bearing – WOW! He had a good dinner (their food is REALLY good there – they gave me a lunch tray and it was wonderful!) and even got on his Monday evening net from his hospital room on his phone (via Echolink I believe)! When I last talked to him Pete sounded just like his usual self, and happy!

I can’t wait to get back to see my Petey in the morning! He will have a couple of more PT sessions and they’ll arrange a whole bunch of stuff that he will need, then he will be coming home in the late afternoon. Casey was able to get time off from work to come and help us get him home and settled – that was a concern of mine – along with how I would take care of an “invalid” when I’m barely able to take care of myself some days. But I don’t have to worry, I can see that he is perfectly capable of getting around as needed, though obviously I’m here to do whatever he needs – and VERY willing! God has made this path so straight, all of the pieces just falling into place, and everyone involved so amazed at how much and how well Pete is walking, how much control he has, etc…That’s our God!
