WHEN THE MORNING STARS SANG
(A Resurrection Sunday devotional)
Luke 24:1-9
The story of the women going to the tomb begins here: “But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in the did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, ‘Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.’ And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.”
Job 38:4a, 7
God speaks to Job, “Where were you … when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”
John 1:1-5
John defines who Jesus is, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Where was Jesus when “the morning stars sang together?” To be clear, Jesus is the “bright and morning star,” but in Job God speaks of something else, of morning stars singing together. So, Jesus was THERE. He not only made the stars, he heard them sing.
Jesus was also there on the sixth day of Creation when God (Jesus) made man in his own image. Jesus said the creation of man was “very good.”
Unfortunately, Adam sinned a horrible sin. It was a sin of separation from God from that moment on.
Jesus purposely chose to do a wonderful thing for me (and you): He died for my sins and made a better re-union with God possible. All I have to do is die to sin with him (its in Romans).
Galatians 2:20
Paul explains it here, too, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
When God created the universe and set man in the Garden, the angels were aware. They rejoiced when God rejoiced.
When man sinned, the angels were involved in preventing man’s return to the Garden.
When Jesus was born, the angels rejoiced and gave glory to God.
When Jesus died on the cross, there was silence. There was not one angelic word recorded from there. Not one angelic activity recorded at the cross.
What happened when he rose from the dead? How can anyone imagine there was no celebration in heaven? I have every reason to think there was great rejoicing. Clearly angels had attended Jesus from birth. They recorded his activities. They observed his miracles. Even in the tomb there were angels. They had remained with his body from the moment his body had been laid in the tomb. These same angels had been with Jesus while he proclaimed the word earlier to his disciples. Who do you think folded his burial garments? Who rolled back the stone? Why do you think the angels lingered until the women came? The angels also had a task: to proclaim “He is not here. He is risen!” The angels reminded the women of Jesus’ words from before the crucifixion.
When I was younger it seemed to me that it was such a small celebration, but now I know the angels had waited three days for that pronouncement. The angels, I’m sure, were there, bowed in reverence when Jesus’ life was restored. “My Holy God. Welcome back to all you have created.”
The morning stars again sang together! The sons of God in heaven repeated their earlier excitement and shouted for joy.
This was new. It was Creation all over again. Why creation? Colossians 1:17 gives the answer: “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” It was the completion of the marvelous acts of God. Something ONLY God could do. Nothing like it had ever been done. Nothing like it would ever be done again, because Jesus Christ COMPLETED all he had in mind to do. His resurrection was proof of his power to do it all.
And all of his creation rejoiced, “He is risen indeed!” And I, along with all the sons of God, am full of praise!
