EUROPE HAS LEARNED NOTHING, Have You?
Below is a quote from Associated Press. Sometimes it is important to respond to current events. In this case I believe we will easily see how little world governments and organizations have learned. Appeasement is rarely a WIN strategy. The European Union is trying to appease its 450 million citizens (it certainly is not an attempt to warn their potential opponents). In some circumstances appeasement is the lesser of 2 evils. In this case it can’t possibly achieve that. If there is no plan to win, the plan is to fail. Will Europe be ready if a crisis occurs? You decide.
The European Union urges citizens to stockpile supplies to last 3 days in case of crisis

“BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union on Wednesday urged citizens across the continent to stockpile food, water and other essentials to last at least 72 hours as war, cyberattacks, climate change and disease increase the chances of a crisis.”
REMEMBER, in an emergency the only person you can rely on is YOU. It has only been 5 years since we first experienced COVID. We all were caught with our pants down (and no bathroom tissue). Store shelves emptied within days as supply chains ground to a halt. Remember?
When trouble comes you don’t necessarily need to have 6 years worth of food, water, paper supplies and ammunition (not a bad idea really), but if everyone has two week’s worth it would be pleasant.
So, why is the EU recommending such a minimal amount of emergency supplies? At our home we are NOT “Preppers,” but we are sensible. We have enough gasoline to get us anywhere east of the Mississippi. We have enough shelf-stable food to last up to 3 weeks. We have enough water to last at least a week. AND we have a 3 month supply of bathroom paper. Plus, we have a list of supplies we want to improve our situation (when we get the time/money), such as certain camping equipment to add to our current supplies.
Three days of food and water could never be enough in a real emergency. Even a flood can cut off supplies for up to a week. North Carolina found out the hard way that a week’s worth of supplies only lasts a week, and some there were without power or access to clean water for months (FEMA didn’t help them much … which is my second point).
Second, in a real emergency don’t rely on the government. During COVID the government didn’t come through. Every state is required by federal law to have certain emergency medical supplies. There was no emergency supply in Michigan and the governor who allowed that to happen was never charged with a crime. One daughter is a nurse. The hospital handed out sterile gloves on Monday and the nurses had to use the same gloves for 4 days (not sterile anymore). The state’s emergency supply was supposed to have those. It didn’t. The nurses were given a mask on Monday and they had to use the same one for 4 days. They are supposed to be used for up to 4 hours. The state’s emergency supply was supposed to have those. It didn’t. Those are two samples.
Don’t rely on science. At the beginning of COVID we were enjoined to trust science. But the medical scientists ignored everything they already KNEW about viral infections. Example, the “6 foot rule” was already known to be useless and senseless. There was no science behind it. They insisted on it anyway. Example, “masking” with cloth masks was also useless. There has been no virus yet that can be stopped by ordinary cloth masks. (So, why were we allowed to wear them…even when quality masks became available?) In one full waiting room there were only 2 persons wearing masks covering their noses, but they had to have a real or fake mask somewhere on their faces. It wasn’t a masquerade ball, folks. Where was the science? [Not that I’m complaining!]
So, have we learned nothing!!!
The article mentioned the following: “The call to action for the EU’s 450 million citizens comes as the 27-nation bloc rethinks its security, especially after the Trump administration warned that Europe must take more responsibility for it.”
OK, 450 million citizens with 3 days of food and water…If troubles came, how long would it take United States and other countries to resupply them with water and food? I’m guessing WEEKS! Any EU citizen who trusts the European Union in this would be a fool. How long can you go without water? How long can your children go without food? How long will it take to resupply other essentials, like bathroom tissue? Supply lines are easily disrupted and difficult to re-establish.
My point is this call is NOT a “call to action,” but a call to senselessness. 450 million with no access to safe water and food, usually with no access to energy means millions of people dying from bad water, rotting food, no heat, and no sanitary or medical supplies.
Finally, why no call to set aside plenty of medical supplies? Simple stuff is important, like rolls of sterile gauze and antibacterial creams. Books (yes, books) on how to make a splint, how to immobilize a broken bone, how to treat a cut, etc. would be valuable (since cellphones and internet could go down).
Learn from the past. Don’t repeat those errors that kill people. Meanwhile, the commission “is keen not to be seen as alarmist.” Thanks, but that is a risk which needs to be taken when the future is unclear.
