Thursday Thoughts – Nov. 18, 2021 Edition

“God was and is fiercely jealous of our hearts. He is the One whose very words can create anything out of nothing. When He speaks, the mountains tremble and the universe bends an ear to listen and obey.” Heather Riggleman

Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire. ~ Hebrews 12:29

Why does the Bible mention “fear and trembling” in reference to God or, more specifically, our interactions with Him? What do awe and reverence have to do with Him? Can we even imagine the magnitude of Him? His holiness? His magnificence? His authority? His power? As always, let’s see what His own Words tell us:

Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! Psalm 33:8

Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created. Revelation 4:11

Awesome is God from his sanctuary; the God of Israel—he is the one who gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God! Psalm 68:35

Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? Exodus 15:11

Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed. Revelation 15:4

If this be the case, it explains a lot. The lack of reverence is evident everywhere in our society. And yesterday I was disturbed by yard signs in a neighborhood we passed. Disturbed because God must not be addressed or approached by anything less than the most humble, respectful, and reverent of attitudes; that’s almost innate in the very souls He created, I would think? Yet in a world where the word “awe” is used to describe a feeling about a new coffee flavor at Starbucks or the color of one’s nail polish, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised when He is dishonored by addressing Him the same as one would address a friend at a football game, with an elbow to the ribs, “Hey don’t worry about our team, buddy, they’ve got this!”

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1

  1. I try to reserve the word AWESOME for God. The American language is messed up. I want tp say God is full of AWE but you see the awe-full. I think you see what I mean so AWESOME is what I say.

    1. I agree. We have taken the words that were only used to describe the greatest of the great, and lowered them to common usage until there are no more words to use for the ultimate in holiness or majesty or greatness – or awesomeness.
