SCIENCE LAGS AGAIN!
So, very recently there was a scientific report “what happens in our brain when we die.”

One commenter said, “The assumption behind this musing is that the last few seconds of life are filled with a collage of life experiences and that the sense of time of those witnessing the death is of the same order of magnitude as the sense of time of the dying person. But time can be massively distorted in the mind as demonstrated by those few persons that have recounted dreams that seemed to last for years. Maybe those few seconds are experienced as a whole lifetime or more.”
The one who requested I look into this commented, “fascinating stuff . . . makes me wonder if/how science and spirit are connected in those final seconds . . .”
Hmmm! I was told that my maternal grandmother saw visions just before dying. She spoke of the beautiful music and asked if others could see the angel. However, I also read of one woman in England who claimed she was surrounded by evil creatures in hell when she almost died. Do people actually see and hear those things in the process of dying? I believe they have experiences they and those around cannot explain. Can science explain it. No. (They also cannot explain how sometimes a person with Alzheimer awakes lucid just before death and knows everyone’s names, tells jokes, asks questions just as if they did not have dementia. Their brains are severely damaged, yet sometimes they are back and 100% “with it.” That they can’t explain either.)
So, literally, all that science gave us is that our brains still work in the moments after we stop breathing. Thanks for the update, Dr. Zemmer. You are merely confirming something which we already knew. We did not need science to study it and science still hasn’t added anything which we did not already have evidence of. Thus, how can people experience “a bright light and peace as they enter heaven” if their brains aren’t firing neurons? Duh!
Now, about how the spirit works. We know a bit about that as well. Let me tell you about how I was privileged to observe what God did one time. A friend’s grandmother was dying. He felt a powerful desire to talk to her about salvation. He asked if I would go with him and we arranged to go on a Thursday night.
On the way to her home he said he was hoping for some miracles. First, his extended family were not religious. Second, they were always with grandma now that she was dying. Third, grandma was slipping in and out of a coma, comatose most of the time. Finally, he had spoken to her about salvation before and she had been resistant.
Shortly after we arrived the family asked if we were staying for a while, they wanted to go for supper. That was miracle one and two. The lady was alert and awake. That was miracle three. When we spoke to her about her spiritual life and the wish of her grandson she listened thoughtfully and became eager to commit herself to the forgiveness God offered. She wasn’t merely being kind. She prayed for salvation. That was miracle four. Finally, I found out later, that less than an hour after we left that evening she slipped back into a coma and never recovered. The timing of our visit was miracle five. Of course, the forgiveness of sins is a miracle in itself.
None of those are science and none of them are probable. I had never met her before yet I was allowed to witness something which was beyond any scientific explanation. God did a miracle, actually 6 at the same time. If Jesus himself had shown up in person with a basket of fresh bread and broiled fish I could not have been any more amazed.
That brings me to my point. People lack understanding of the truth, but God never does. That dying woman received just what she wanted exactly when she needed it. Knowing she was dying, she wanted to be ready for death; arriving at death’s door she realized she was not. God showed up, did miracles, and loved her into His kingdom.
I believe God. He doesn’t lie. He told Daniel (Old Testament) things which were to happen hundreds of years in the future. They happened just that way. He told Saul (Paul) that a man by a certain name would come seeking him and restore his vision. It happened just that way and God accomplished it without a single scientist assisting Him.
We need someone who will speak truth, and that may not always come from a human source. It does always come from a Heavenly One.
Physical vs spiritual? Well, the physical is obvious. The spiritual is separate and more important. Science may be able, with time, to tell us everything about the physical (maybe even what thoughts are in our brains at death). However, I don’t think science will ever be able to connect the physical and the spiritual. Science isn’t about miracles and isn’t known for always being the truth (because: humans).
The spiritual is about truth and miracles. What causes a person to live, for example? (Strangely, medical science still isn’t perfect at starting a non-functioning heart. Those electric paddle machines, called defibrillators, you see used on TV shows only correct unhealthy heart rhythm, they don’t re-start non-functional hearts). Yet God does that in the womb without any machinery. The hearts of babies start beating long before birth. And what causes a physically dying human to have hope for the future? Science doesn’t. God does that, too.

I shouldn’t be so cruel to scientists. They want to understand, but they can’t let go of their own methods. What would they learn? The author of the article said, “Still, the surge of gamma, the dance of alpha and theta, suggests something orchestrated, not chaotic.”
Yes. God did that. After all the pain and confusion, a moment of peace and comfort? Or is it the mind just telling the body its over? I prefer to believe the first.
I tend to agree.
