I just wanted to write about a fun experience I had on Gab yesterday!
I have heavily curated the site for my own use, so I see what I want to see – and there’s plenty of uplifting, funny, delightful content on my feeds! In a rare moment of thankfulness I posted, “Too many amazing and uplifting groups here…too many beautiful and kind and wonderful souls here…I need more hours in the day – more “gab hours”! Well before I know it people were liking and loving it, reposting it, commenting on it, quoting it, and starting to follow me – the sum total of all of these responses was well over 1K!
I’ve never had such a response to a single post, anywhere! But I always believe that if someone takes the time to read my posts and then respond to them, I should at the very least acknowledge them. So I spent the day replying to comments and also going to the profiles of everyone who had reposted & quoted, and followed most of them, adding them to my private feed for people who respond to my posts or follow me in any way. I got through a few hundred people, and can count on one hand those who didn’t make the cut (those who use profanity or espouse hatred or whatever – who are supposedly the majority if you were listen to the press’ reporting on gab!).
This is an ongoing process, as I want to acknowledge and follow/add to my list everyone. This is an opportunity to have more lovely people in my life and I want to take advantage of it while it lasts! SO FUN!!!
On the other platform where I spent a lot of time I get discouraged easily. Because, when I’m moderating the federated feed for our instance, I see all kinds of things that don’t belong in a Christian discussion group, there is so much nastiness there that I get sad when I read it, so much rage, I always wonder how people can walk around so angry all the time! I have sort of trained my eyes, since I do this for several hours every day, to skim over the posts without actually reading them; my eyes will stop on any profanity or vulgarity that is against our rules, and I delete them. (I see a lot more negative on Mastodon than on Gab!) That is helpful, when I can do it – because there’s also a LOT of beautiful and interesting stuff which I WANT to read! Finding some of the great people to follow is one of the benefits of moderating though, and I’m really thankful for that and for them! And I totally love those in our Mastodon instance (as well as another instance to which I belong but don’t moderate for), and couldn’t even THINK about leaving!
I also use Pixelfed – the fediverse’s answer to Instagram – and love that also, as you know I try to post at least one picture there every day, and while I doing that I relax by admiring and enjoying the other things people in my home feed (everyone I follow) at the same time. It is a very enjoyable part of my day!
BUT mainly I wanted to share the fun I’ve been having on Gab this weekend! And if you want to see other posts that talk about Gab, Mastodon, Pixelfed, and other social sites about which I’ve written, go to my SUPER FIND! and check out the links!
